FREQUENTY ASKED QUESTIONS
What is the United Arts Council of Greater Greensboro (UAC)?
With a mission to “champion the arts,”
the United Arts Council raises money for the arts, advocates for the
arts and increases awareness of the arts by emphasizing arts and their role
in education, economic development and quality of life.
What is the United Arts Fund?
The United Arts Fund is the Arts Council’s annual fundraising
campaign. The 2008 goal is to raise $1.42 million to support
existing programs while expanding outreach efforts to sustain and grow
resources for organizations, teachers and artists.
Where do funds come from and how does the UAC distribute funds?
The United Arts Council secures 97% of its funds from donations
and grants from individuals, companies, foundations and government.
The remaining 3% revenue is received from endowment interest and studio
rentals from our Sternberger Artists Center. Currently,
89% of our funds are invested through grants and services to the arts
community. Grants are in the form of operating support to mature,
established arts organizations and supplemental grants to local arts
organizations, artists and schools. Services include such resources
as advocacy, key relationship building and overall marketing and promotion
of the arts throughout the community. 11 percent of funds cover our general administrative expenses.
In addition, the UAC provides broad services including advocacy, technical
assistance and overall marketing and promotion of the arts throughout
the community.
What type of funding is available?
The UAC offers a variety of grants, including Basic Operating Grants
to mature, local arts organizations; and Supplemental Grants in the
form of project assistance, capacity building and new ventures to local
arts organizations, teachers and artists.
Why is it important to support the arts?
We believe the arts are core to our community’s existence and future
development. The arts touch us all and impact all aspects of our city’s
life: education, health and well-being, economic development and more.
The arts teach new skills, new ideas, new perspectives. The arts
spark our innate creativity and embrace our community, increasing opportunity
for dialogue and understanding. The arts matter and help to make Greensboro
an innovative, thriving and prosperous community. And, the arts generate
$30.7 million for our local economy!
